$ 1.2 million Awarded For Failed IVC Filter

Several lawsuits have claimed that IVC filters have been responsible for causing life-threatening complications among patients. The device has been linked to heart attack, stroke, and pulmonary embolism, leading to multi-million dollar lawsuits. The write-up is trying to uncover how the implant is affecting the victims.

A patient fitted with the Cook Celect IVC filter was awarded close to 1.2 million dollars against the complications caused by the device. According to the lawsuit, the victim suffered from multiple blood clot filter side effects including perforated organs and blood vessels.

As per the patient's case history, the surgeons were supposed to retrieve the implant after seven weeks of the initial surgery.

But even after repeated attempts, the doctors could not pull out the device as it had embedded deep into the blood vessel. Also, the legs of the filter had broken off and perforated to the small intestine and aorta.

What are IVC filters? And, why are they used?

The IVC filters are metallic devices used to trap blood clots from traveling to the heart or lungs. These conical metallic implants are supposed to prevent deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism, and stroke. The implant is recommended for patients who cannot use blood thinners like Eliquis or Xarelto.

But the device has not been free from complications. Many in the medical community believe that the implant lacks the necessary safety profile, making it very risky for the patients. Some of the complications include:
  • Abdomen Pain
  • Puncturing Vena Cava, Lung, or Heart
  • Risk of heart attack and stroke
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fracture and migrations of the implants
  • Internal bleeding
Any of these blood clot filter side effects can cause irreversible damage to the patients. In some cases, the issues might pop up as a delayed response, and could be difficult to detect and treat. A news report has linked 39 deaths to failed IVC filters.

Lawsuits against IVC filters

Close to 8,000 lawsuits is currently running against IVC filter manufacturers in the federal court. Most grievances claim that metallic devices have caused serious complications including death. Manufacturers like Cook Medical and Bard have been slapped with million-dollar settlements as damages and punitive damages.

IVC filter brands like Cook Celect, Cook Günther Tulip, Bard G2 Express, and Bard Recovery have been named in several MDLs (Multi-district Litigations) for causing irreversible damages to the victims.
